The 2025 report lists total hardness averaging approximately 94 mg/L as calcium carbonate, with results from about 80.4 to 110 mg/L.
That equals an average near 5.5 grains per gallon, with a reported range of approximately 4.7 to 6.4 gpg.
This is milder than the upper-end hardness reported in Rockwall, Little Elm or Richardson. It is not zero-hardness water. At Arlington’s reported levels, homeowners can still notice spotting on glass and fixtures, mineral deposits around aerators, reduced soap efficiency, scale inside water-heating equipment, and a desire for softer-feeling laundry and bathing water.

This is not a reason to pretend that filtration has no value. It changes the emphasis. For Arlington, the strongest whole-home rationale is not an alarming municipal violation story. It is a persistent chloramine residual near the upper end of the permitted disinfectant range, personal preference regarding taste and odor, additional reduction of detectable organic treatment byproducts, and refinement beyond the public-system baseline.
EWG applies much lower independent benchmarks to several individual DBPs. Those values are not federal limits and should not be presented as proof that Arlington failed its obligations.
Arlington’s laboratory reported collecting more than 7,400 samples and performing more than 17,000 analyses during the reporting year. That level of municipal testing deserves to be acknowledged rather than dismissed.
It also demonstrates the boundary of a city report: Arlington can monitor the public system extensively, but it cannot describe every water heater, fixture, recirculation loop, service line or existing filter after the meter. Because the official range is approximately 4.7–6.4 gpg, correct sizing may be more modest than systems marketed for much harder North Texas water.
