Denton treats water from two regional lakes

Denton’s municipal water comes from Lake Lewisville and Lake Ray Roberts. The city operates treatment facilities associated with those sources rather than relying entirely on finished water purchased from another city. That distinction matters because Denton’s treatment process, source mix and local distribution monitoring determine the municipal profile.

The 2025 report states that Denton’s bulk water met applicable state and federal requirements and describes the city’s objective as producing water of higher quality than the minimum required. That language aligns with the core Water Fixers DFW position: compliance is essential, but minimum compliance is not the only standard a household may choose.

Denton’s disinfectant profile

The 2025 report lists average chloramine residual around 3.21 ppm, with individual results from approximately 0.08 to 4.50 ppm.

The maximum residual disinfectant level is based on a running annual average rather than one isolated sample. The report did not identify a disinfectant violation. For a homeowner, the useful fact is that chloramine remains an intentional and measurable component of the water at distribution scale. A whole-home carbon system should therefore be designed around chloramine, not marketed from a generic free-chlorine claim.

Bromate gives Denton a distinct treatment discussion

Denton’s 2025 report lists average bromate around 1.50 ppb, with results from non-detect to approximately 7.30 ppb.

The federal bromate MCL is 10 ppb. EWG applies a much lower independent benchmark of 0.1 ppb.

This is one of the cleaner examples of regulatory compliance versus a lower personal benchmark:

• Denton’s average and reported range remained within the federal limit.
• Bromate was still detected.
• EWG considers substantially lower levels preferable.
• A homeowner may choose additional drinking-water treatment without claiming that the city violated the law.

Bromate is a dissolved treatment byproduct. It should note that it cannot be resolved with a softener. ClaRO is the more relevant household stage when bromate reduction is among the drinking-water goals, subject to the actual membrane platform and supporting performance data.

Denton’s DBP and TDS profile

The 2025 report lists:

• TTHM: locational running annual average around 13 ppb;
• HAA5: locational running annual average around 11 ppb;
• TDS: average approximately 219.5 mg/L, with results from 190 to 249 mg/L.

The HAA5 and TTHM values were below their federal group limits.

TDS is not a contaminant identity. It represents the combined dissolved-ion content and can influence taste and reverse-osmosis performance. A softener changes hardness chemistry but does not substantially lower TDS. Denton’s report did not publish one simple current hardness range suitable for every home, so local testing at your address is highly recommended.

UCMR5 and emerging-compound monitoring

Denton participated in EPA’s fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule, sampling for lithium and twenty-nine PFAS compounds. UCMR5 data helps EPA evaluate national occurrence and possible future regulation. A detection does not automatically establish a federal violation.

For homeowners, the program’s relevance is practical: municipal monitoring can reveal compounds that fall outside older routine compliance tables, and point-of-use treatment can provide another layer for drinking water.
