Source water comes primarily from surface lakes (Lavon, Lewisville, Ray Hubbard) where regional limestone geology contributes calcium and magnesium. Result: Many homes experience 'hard' to 'very hard' water (often 8-18 GPG).
Drought conditions can raise mineral concentration in surface water by reducing dilution in reservoirs. In North Texas, this can result in periodic increases in hardness (calcium and magnesium), especially during extended dry cycles.
Most DFW cities disinfect using chloramine (chlorine + ammonia). Chloramine is more stable but harder to remove than chlorine. Basic filters are ineffective for full removal, so catalytic carbon systems are commonly used when full chlorine/chloramine reduction is desired.
The same minerals causing scale can prevent soap from rinsing cleanly off your skin and hair, leading to potential dryness or irritation for sensitive skin types.

Getting a passing grade from the federal government does not mean the water meets the latest health guidelines. Some legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years.
The best way to ensure clean tap water is to keep pollution out of the source water in the first place, or install a final barrier at home.
While municipal water meets legal safety standards, many homeowners choose Reverse Osmosis to remove things like lead, microplastics, and 'forever chemicals' (PFAS) for true peace of mind.
