Little Elm publishes useful secondary-constituent data

Little Elm receives treated surface water from the North Texas Municipal Water District. The town’s 2025 report identifies regional sources including Lake Lavon, Bois d’Arc Lake, Lake Texoma and Jim Chapman Lake.

What makes the report especially valuable is its secondary-constituent table. It lists:

• Total hardness: 96–200 mg/L as calcium carbonate, approximately 5.6–11.7 grains per gallon
• Total dissolved solids: 182–455 mg/L
• Calcium: 31.2–61.3 mg/L
• Magnesium: 6.27–9.44 mg/L

This is the opposite of a one-number city myth. Little Elm’s own report shows that mineral conditions can vary widely.

At the upper end, hardness is substantial enough to create obvious scale, spotting and water-heater accumulation. At the lower end, many homeowners will still notice the difference after properly designed softening.

Chloramine is present at a meaningful residual

Little Elm’s 2025 report lists average chloramine residual around 2.1 ppm, with results from approximately 0.55 to 3.11 ppm. The disinfectant is doing an essential public-system job. It also remains present when the water reaches the property.

That gives Carbonyx Elite a clear role for homeowners seeking less disinfectant taste or odor and a whole-home barrier for appropriate organic compounds and disinfection byproducts.

EWG highlights HAA5, HAA9 and nitrate

Little Elm’s EWG profile reports:

• HAA5: approximately 20.2 ppb, compared with EWG’s 0.1 ppb guideline and the federal 60 ppb group limit
• HAA9: approximately 29.2 ppb, compared with EWG’s 0.06 ppb guideline; no federal MCL exists for HAA9 as a group
• Nitrate: approximately 0.410 ppm, compared with EWG’s 0.14 ppm guideline and the federal 10 ppm limit

These comparisons should not be presented as municipal violations. They show the dramatic difference between enforceable public-system limits and EWG’s independent health benchmarks.

Little Elm is a particularly clear example of the Water Fixers DFW thesis: the utility can comply with the law, the water can still contain substantial hardness, chloramine and reported DBPs, and the homeowner can choose additional treatment for a higher personal standard.

The right Little Elm treatment sequence

1. Water Fixers Clarion Elite

Clarion Elite treats the reported 5.6–11.7 gpg hardness range. The broad range affects both capacity and salt efficiency. Programming at the low end when the house receives higher hardness risks premature exhaustion. Programming every home at the high end can waste capacity and salt. A current result gives the system a defensible starting point.

2. Water Fixers Carbonyx Elite

Carbonyx Elite treats the normal chloramine condition and the whole-home taste, odor and appropriate DBP goals. Little Elm’s combination of a measured residual and EWG byproduct data makes carbon contact time central to the design—not an optional technical footnote.

3. Water Fixers ClaRO

ClaRO gives the household a separate drinking and cooking stage. It is the more targeted choice for nitrate and other dissolved constituents that are not addressed by a softener.

TDS is not the same as contamination

Little Elm’s 182–455 mg/L TDS range is useful, but it must be explained correctly. TDS is the combined concentration of dissolved ions. It can influence taste and is relevant to RO performance, but it does not identify which specific compounds are present and does not prove that the water is unsafe.

Clarion Elite changes the form of hardness minerals; it does not meaningfully lower total dissolved solids. ClaRO is the stage designed to reduce TDS at the drinking-water point.

A positive lead-service-line fact

Little Elm reports that its service-line inventory is entirely non-lead. That does not rule out every lead-bearing fixture or component inside private plumbing, but it means the page should not use generic lead-service-line fear to sell RO.

The town’s microplastics discussion

Little Elm’s report also addresses public concern about microplastics and notes that modern treatment processes remove a large portion of particles. This is useful educational content, but it does not justify a promise that any residential system provides complete microplastic removal. Membrane and particulate performance must be tied to pore size, certification and actual system design.
